Boat Engine Knocking Under Load. it wasn't easy, but a mechanic finally identified the cause of my boat engine bogging down under load. you can try pulling off the drive again when its out of the water, hook up a hose to the thermostat housing and run. There was no/ very little. sense you have not yet put it into gear as to load the engine, you may rule out “detonation“ as the cause! I have a knock at 4600rpm max throttle every 30sec or so. i just pulled my engine last weekend (merc 120) due to a very loud knocking noise. i just took it out for the first time and runs and drives fine except when i get up to around 3000rpms under a load it. If i back off the throttle off just a bit to 4500rpm it. common problems that could arise in a boat engine generally include engine knocking, poor performance, overheating, and oil leaks.
